EWAN MCGREGOR had a ball with his co-stars while filming the upcoming live action version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.
The Scottish actor takes on the role of talking candlestick Lumiere in Bill Condon’s version of the classic Disney film, with Emma Watson playing Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast. Ewan is no stranger to belting out songs, having wowed with his vocals in 2001’s “Moulin Rouge!,” so he didn’t feel intimidated by the part made iconic by Jerry Orbach in the 1991 animated movie.
“It’s interesting because it’s partly animated, but partly not,” he explained to Collider. “Voicing an animation is a process. They partly animated off of what you’ve done, and you partly perform off of what they’ve done. It’s a nice collaboration.
“I really like working with Bill Condon. He’s a director I’d love to work with again. And there are some great actors in it – Stanley Tucci, Emma Thompson, Sir Ian McKellen. We had a great time together when we were working on set. And then, I’ve enjoyed working with Bill on the post-production side of it, as well. And recording the big Be Our Guest song was just fantastically fun, and nothing (like anything) I’ve done in quite awhile.”
In fact, this musical movie marked the first time he’d sang in a film since the Baz Luhrmann-directed flick over 10 years ago.
This isn’t the only project Ewan fans have got to look forward to though, as he’s also working on a sequel to Danny Boyle’s 1996 cult classic, “Trainspotting.” He’ll be stepping back into the shoes of Renton, with fellow original stars including Jonny Lee Miller and Robert Carlyle also returning.
“There was a time when I didn’t imagine doing it,” Ewan admitted. “There was never a script of it that I read. Nobody ever sent me a script of it. For 10 years, the novel (by Irvine Welsh) has been around, but it’s taken until just last winter that I got the script for this one.
“I forget exactly when I read it, but it was late last year, at some point. It’s a really strong script, and it’s going to be extraordinary to be back working with Danny Boyle again, who I always adored working with, and the guys – Jonny, Ewen (Bremner) and Bobby (Carlyle). It will be quite extraordinary to do a sequel to a story we made 20 ago.”
Both features are due for release in 2017.
